Latest “Rurouni Kenshin” Live-action Film Tops Japanese Box Office

Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno, the first part of the final installment of the Takeru Sato-starring Rurouni Kenshin live-action film series, was finally released in Japan on August 1 with 439 screens. It earned 592,230,000 yen with 433,346 tickets on Friday and Saturday. It was the biggest opening for Japanese films released in this year so far, and was above the first-two day record of the last week’s top runner Godzilla‘s 584,497,000 yen with 339,048 tickets (427 screens). The three-day total earning from Friday to Sunday was an impressive 820,000,000 yen (about US$ 8 million). The first live-action film in August 2012 earned 399,534,000 yen in its first weekend and its total domestic box office gross was 3.01 billion yen (about US$29 million).

With the upcoming second part Rurouni Kenshin: Densetsu no Saigo-hen (Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends) to be released successively on September 13, it is highly possible that the live-action films

will wind up being the highest-grossing Japanese films of the season.
