FEATURE: Fanart Friday - Greased Lightning Edition

Fanart Friday returns, bragging about its eleven-second 40. Last week, we tanked alongside our favorite STRENGTH-based characters, but continuing our development of THE PERFECT TEAM, now it's time to hit the ground running with SPEED-based characters!

Just like a heavy hitter can be the team's main damage dealer, a speedster can cover every angle of a tough situation in a fraction of the time and effort. The thing about speed as a quality--and really what this month's whole "team" aspect is about--is that you're trading off a lot of other perks just to be fast. We'll talk about that more as we continue--on your mark, get set, GO!

ffcammy

by Tea@ナケナシ

Let's start with my Street Fighter main for the entire IV series, the Killer Bee herself, Cammy! Speed characters are an absolute blast in fighting games due to the hit-and-run style they need to survive. They're not designed to plant their feet and trade hits, but zip all over the battlefield, flustering and frustrating slower opponents.

ffhaikyu

by シキユリ

You're going to see a lot of sports titles in this installment, because speed is a very important quality to have in any sport you play. Haikyu!! doesn't just require fleet feet--Hinata also has to be able to stop on a dime and use the ridiculous spring in his legs to help Karasuno's volleyball team come out on top.

fflenalee

by けちょん

Looking like a combat-ready Hatsune Miku, D.Gray-Man's Lenalee Lee uses crazy kicks and what are effectively magic boot jets to stomp demon ass.

ffhamatora

by 一帆

I haven't watched Hamatora or its sequel yet, but I keep hoping that Nice (who can move at the speed of sound, or 340.29 m/s... or 1125 ft/s) uses his name as a catchphrase. What can I say? I like catchphrases.

ffsloth

by ゴリゴ

Y'know what's really scary in a fight? A big guy who's unnaturally fast. Fullmetal Alchemist's Sloth doesn't move much (like me), but is capable of bursts of speed in the heat of battle (...sorta like me?), so he's this gigantic dude who's the size of a house, who's able to close distance in the blink of an eye. Fun!

ffkillua

by MadPandaKira READER SUBMISSION!

Most speedsters are small and nimble, though, like Killua. I went on a crazy marathon binge of Hunter x Hunter recently and finished up the Chimera Ant arc, so seeing Killua go Super Saiyan use his Godspeed Mode against Youpi was pretty impressive.

ffrider

by 綾風柳晶

Horses have always been symbols of speed, so Fate-Stay/Night's Rider (aka Medusa) zips around the battlefield with this crazy chain-plus-spike weapon, striking from every possible angle and playing keep-away forever and ever.

ffaomine

by もす

In Kuroko's Basketball, the Generation of Miracles is pretty clearly broken up by the traits we're looking at this month: Murasakibara is Strength, Aomine here is pretty clearly Speed, Midorima is Skill, Kise is Guts, and Akashi is their terrifying Leader.

ffkenshin

by 藻(もえぎ)

Kenshin is one of the most iconic speed-based heroes in anime and manga, and he shows it off in the very first episode of Rurouni Kenshin by KOing an entire dojo full of thugs before they have time to react! I still cringe at the sheer amount of finger-breaking in that first episode...

ffflash

by ultmte READER SUBMISSION!

As the archetype of speed-based heroes, the Flash doesn't just run fast--he taps into the Speed Force, a field of energy that grants him (and other runners, like Impulse) an arsenal of speed- and physics-based powers.

ffcougar

by 松下クン(マツノササクレ)

s-CRY-ed's Straight Cougar has a pretty handy Alter ability--he himself isn't fast, but he can grant ludicrous speed to objects he touches, like his car... or the armor on his body, effectively giving himself super speed.

ffhiei

by とじょさか。

While every member of Team Urameshi has a pretty good ability set, Hiei obviously put most of his points into speed. The rest of his XP went into buffing his Black Dragon Wave, which he only used a handful of times throughout Yu Yu Hakusho. The thing's got kick!

ffitagaki

by わっしょい@6号館D わ13b

Hajime no Ippo's cocky, playful Itagaki Manabu shows the real-life dangers of being a speed specialist--you're a leaf on the wind, watch how you soar--but that means you're just as fragile and easily-dropped. Itagaki's lightning-fast, but one lucky punch that slips through the cracks can change everything.

ffyoru

by OroNoDa READER SUBMISSION!

Of Bleach's speedsters, I think Yoruichi best exemplifies the skill, being the "God of Flash" with her mastery of the Flash Step and crazy hit-and-run fighting style, but...

ffichigo

by 氷一

...the normally guts-based Ichigo gets in on the fun when he gets his Bankai. He kinda needs it when he's fighting someone who can attack from any direction he wants while standing still.

ffruby

by 阿洛

Usually, speed demons fight with small, light, accurate, and deadly weapons, but RWBY's Ruby isn't slowed down one bit by her scythe!

ffyowapeda

by TOKO

One thing I love about Yowapeda is that it isn't just about sprinters like Tadokoro and Naruko here--there's more to racing than just excelling at flats!

ffkurousagi

by シンタ

All right, here's another stab at Problem Children are Coming From Another World, Aren't They's Kuro Usagi. In a number of cultures, rabbits represent speed, so I'll just take you guys' word for it!

ffmuneshige

by けいと

Jesus Christ, this was a difficult one to find. Well, sort of--Muneshige Tachibana is an actual historical figure, it's just that there's a whole ton more fanart of his Samurai Warriors self than his Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere version, where he's renowned for his incredible speed in battle (and is a white guy, for some reason).

ffsena

by U-min

They say it right at the beginning of Eyeshield 21--football is a game that requires speed, power, and strategy, and you need a team to play football. Sena brings more than enough speed to the Devil Bats' games, while slowly developing his other traits along the way.

ffhokage

by ほくろこ

4th Hokage Minato Namikaze is pretty damn quick on his feet, but isn't he mainly just teleporting? He's fast, but when push comes to shove, it's not him moving fast--he's blinking out of existence and reappearing elsewhere... right? I mean, we only saw him in action twice in Naruto Shippuden, so...

fft89

by sdkfz221

Hey, don't laugh! Aside from whatever volleyball-related shenanighans the girls are getting up to with this Type-89 in Girls und Panzer, actual tanks are pretty speedy! The M-1 Abrams main battle tank has a jet engine attached to it!

ffnegi

by わや

Much like Killua, Negima's Negi Springfield has a power-up that turns him into pure lightning. Shocking... positively shocking.

ffsilvercrow

by usama

While not all that light on his feet in the real world, Accel World's Arita specializes in speed in both his online alter-egos--first as the little pig, and then he really cuts loose as Silver Crow.

ffsonicflash

by オムニタイトル

And to conclude... sorry, furries--it's already been shown that Sonic's marketing team is full of crap, so the Flash is gonna run him down without even breaking a sweat.

All right, slow down--that's everything for this week! There's no way I could have included everybody, so who are your favorite fleet-footed speedsters? Sound off in the comments and let us know!

Like I say every week, your work is always welcome here on Fanart Friday, regardless of your skill level or experience. Just PM me the full link to your work, and I'll make sure to include it in a future installment! Here are the next three themes for Fanart Friday:

-Next week, on AUGUST 15th, when you can't outfight a problem with strength and you're not fast enough to outrun it, that's when you have to rely on SKILL! Even if you have other traits, a quick mind can get you out of a lot of trouble--which quick thinkers will take the spotlight next week? THIS IS THE ONLY THEME I'M TAKING REQUESTS FOR THIS WEEK!

-Then, on AUGUST 22nd, when all your trump cards are exhausted, sometimes all that's left is pure muleheadedness and GUTS! Your attacks aren't hurting them, your legs can't move, your head's swimming, but your heart's still got it!

-On AUGUST 29th, who will be the LEADERS of this PERFECT TEAM we've put together over the course of August? I'm not talking de facto frontmen like Son Goku, no--I'm talking about actual leaders who inspire and take action!

Thanks again for coming by to check out Fanart Friday! Have a great weekend (even if you're watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which doesn't look that bad--c'mon, I used to regularly watch Troma films), and I hope you drop by next week!
