Kurotsuchi and Giselle see who has the better undead army, but once Bambietta is shown to be outmatched by the revivedArrancar. Giselle reveals one more horrifying surprise that very well may put victory in her hands.
The Good
While I really enjoyed last issue, I thought the moment of Giselle showing off her shinigami army of zombies really lacked any emotional punch. Sure, Ikkaku and Yumichika comment on all the "familiar faces", but I didn't recognize a one of them. They're pretty much a collection of red shirts from Star Trek. I couldn't help but think that this would be much more of a punch to the gut if we had known any of these guys. Well, that was all cleared up when Giselle finally reveals her ace in the hole. When I saw who she had turned, I swear my jaw dropped. There's not a chance I'm spoiling this moment for readers. Go check it out yourself, and no spoiling in the comments, people.
I have to hand it to Kubo on story planning. I had almost forgotten about that moment where Captain Kurotsuchi found those corpses waaaaaay back during the Hueco Mundo story. I was even surprised how much I enjoyed the tenuous relationship between Kurotsuchi and these Arrancar. Watching Kurotsuchi playing with his punishment trigger reminded me of that moment in DARK KNIGHT where the Heath Ledger Joker was trying to get his bombs to go off at the hospital. It's nice that the creator took characters that I had no interest in previously and still managed to get me to laugh at their antics.
The Bad
It struck me as sort of bizarre that Bambietta would be so hilariously outmatched by Charlotte. More so with her in the Voll Stern Dich mode. Although, I can only imagine that all the beating and damage she's been suffering has taken its toll. That would make sense. Zombie or not, she shouldn't be getting stronger after being blown up and her limbs torn off.
Verdict 5/5
I was overjoyed that BLEACH appeared first for this week's edition of SHONEN JUMP. This above the other Shonen Trilogy chapters was the one I wanted to write about the most. After Kurotsuchi and these Arrancar appeared in this battle, I thought the tide had shifted dramatically and Giselle was no longer long for the Soul Society. With the way this chapter ends, our heroes are in some serious trouble. Best chapter of the week by a country mile, as far as I'm concerned.
