One Piece's official portal site One Piece. com revealed today on September 26 that 61-year-old veteran voice actor Toru Furuya is voicing Sabo, the adopted brother of Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace, in the upcoming episodes of the TV anime series. He was chosen by Eiichiro Oda himself, the original creator of the manga, in the secret audition for Sabo. The character voiced by Furuya will start appearing from the 663rd episode scheduled to be aired on September 28. By the way, Mayumi Tanaka, the voice actress for Luffy is now 59 (born in 1955), so the two are in the same generation.
Toru Furuya made his debut as a professional voice actor for the protagonist "Kid" in Kaizoku Oiji/The Pirate Prince in 1966 when he was 13 years old. The first anime character made him so famous among the Japanese general public was Hyuma Hoshi in Kyojin no Hoshi/Star of the Giants in 1968-1971 (1st series) and its sequels. He has played various anime characters for more than 48 years,
including Amuro Ray (Mobile Suit Gundam series), Pegasus Seiya (Saint Seiya series), Kyosuke Kasuga
(Kimagure Orange Road), Yamcha (Dragon Ball series), and Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Mask (Sailor Moon series).
