New PS4 and PS3 Headset Has 7.1 Virtual Surround Sound, Will Run You $70

Today, Sony announced a new gaming headset for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 (or really anything, given it uses a 3.5mm jack), and you won’t have to wait too long to get your hands on it. The $70 headset launches this fall.

The headset (above) includes 7.1 virtual surround sound, support for custom audio modes created by developers, a retractable boom mic for voice chat, breathable ear cushions, and in-line volume and mic controls. Sony also says the headset features a lightweight design to keep you comfortable during extended gaming sessions.

If you need a new headset right away and want to buy one from Sony, the company will starting selling an “extremely limited” Glacier White stereo headset (at left) beginning tomorrow. This model, a variation of the $100 Gold headset, will only be available at retail for a “short time” and while supplies last.

This headset’s release is timed with the launch of the $450 Glacier White PS4 bundle, which goes on sale tomorrow. It includes a white system and a copy of Bungie’s shooter, Destiny. In addition, starting tomorrow, Sony will offer new DualShock 4 controllers in the form of Wave Blue and Glacier White pads.

Finally, Sony has announced that a special Destiny audio mode will be available for the headset companion app for PS4 and PS3 beginning tomorrow. “Enjoy the sounds of the Destiny universe the way Bungie intended,” Sony says in a post on the PlayStation Blog.
