It was officially announced that a stage play adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's critically-acclaimed manga Pluto is in the works for early 2015. The manga is based on the "The Greatest Robot on Earth" arc of Osamu Tezuka's classic manga series Tetsuwan Atom/Astro Boy. It was produced by Takashi Nagasaki, Urasawa's former editor at Shogakukan, and supervised by Tezuka's son, Makoto Tezuka. After being serialized in Shogakukan's Big Comic Original from 2003 to 2009, it was compiled in eight tankobon volumes. Back in October 2010, Tezuka Production announced that Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me) acquired the rights to its live-action/CGI film adaptation.
The Pluto stage play directed/choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, who previously worked on "TeZukA," the UK-Japan-Belgium joint play in 2012 inspired by Osamu Tezuka's works. 30-year-old actor Mirai Moriyama who starred in the play, again works with Cherkaoui as Atom. In Urasawa's manga,
Atom was illustrated as a teenage-looking robot boy, so Cherkaoui's version Atom played by Moriyama may
have a different look.
The play will be performed at Bunkamura Theater Cocoon in Tokyo from January 9 to February 1, 2015, then
at Morinomiya Piloti Hall in Osaka from February 6 to 11. The tickets will go on sale on October 25.
