Welcome back to "Anime-Planet Recommends...", where we showcase some of the recommendations you have made on Anime-Planet over the past week. As always, you can add your own on the site for a chance to be featured in the next week's column.
Summer season is in full swing, but the past week, you've been recommending a good mix of classics and new favorites alike. Let's get going!
We all know that TTGL and Kill la Kill form the perfect bromance.
The same can be arguably said about FLCL.
Here's what reedhauser has to say:
"Both are over the top and chaotic, not to mention share similar genres (parody, mecha, comedy, bizarre). However, more importantly they are both brilliantly strong coming of age stories and much deeper than their jovial appearance. The protagonists (Naota and Simon) exert personalities that many can relate to, and the secondary characters (Haruko and Kamina) exemplify personality traits many strive for. Both animes will impart the importance of faith and confidence in oneself, that our relationships are fluid and influenced by the growth of others, and that change, though often bittersweet, is a necessary step forward."
Time for some ecchi! Fans of B Gata H Kei - Yamada's First Time might enjoy Sakura Diaries or vice versa.
Jdogtoocool writes:
"If you liked B Gata H Kei and were looking for something similar than Sakura Diaries is for you (and vice versa). Very similar atmospheres, the plots are almost the same, and both are just hilarious and at the same time super romantic. Sakura Diaries was produced significantly earlier than Yamada's First Time so there will be some differences in the presentation, but if you can see part that you'll have loads of fun. If you liked one I'm sure you'll love the other."
Next up, did you watch Space Dandy and/or are now enjoying season 2? You aren't alone.
HasseRovdjur, one of our character moderators, thinks you might like Cowboy Bebop, Dirty Pair or Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.
First up, the classic Cowboy Bebop.
He writes:
"Both anime are about space travellers that often are in dire need of cash, and their main source of income is solving various jobs: bounty hunting in Bebop and searching for new extraterrestial life in Space Dandy. Both are usually rather light-hearted and are very episodic, Dandy moreso, and most episodes are stand-alone. Cowboy Bebop has frequent forays into dramatic territory as well, while Dandy is almost always comedic. Both anime has a similar aspect to sci-fi and space travel, though Dandy features aliens and intergalactic travel, while Bebop is not as advanced. Still, both are similar enough to warrant a recommendation."
And how about Dirty Pair?
Hasse continues:
"Both Dirty Pair and Space Dandy are episodic sci-fi space-faring romps with great (and colourful) animation and bitchin' soundtracks, and neither show takes itself very seriously. Fans of either show looking for another comedic show without an overarching plot should probably consider one of these."
Finally, for Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt,
He concludes:
"Both series are comedic romps filled to the brim with colourful –bordering on garish– animation and a heavily episodic premise; basically, both shows are just doing whatever they feel like doing in any given episode. A lot of the times they are doing a send-up of a specific movie or genre, with little thought about continuity.
The humour in Panty & Stocking is much more in your face, and the whole show has a lot more attitude and edge than Space Dandy, which is mostly a parodic sci-fi series focusing on breasts. Still, I believe that they are similar enough to warrant a recommendation."
Sports time! Athletic lovers might enjoy Haikyuu or Big Windup.
...dat face @_@
KinkyRice thinks you'd like these because:
"Both are sports anime of course. The main characters are really talented, but dont realize it. They have a really talented partner on each team that fights to bring out their full potential. Ookiku is more laid back, and sweet with a set of younger people. The main character isn't as charismatic and flashy as Shoyo but they are in some way alike when it comes to not recognizing when they are amazing at what they can do for their team."
Ever think to yourself "I wish I could go back in time and live in Victorian days?" You might enjoy Gosick or Kuroshitsuji - though potentially only for that reason.
Shivichan says:
"Both shows give that awesome Victorian - era feel which not many shows have been able to achieve. Other than that, there is no real similarity, but you may want to give it a try if you want more of that Victorian-era England feel. "
For your magical girl fix, how about Shugo Chara or Selfish Fairy Mirumo de Pon?
Shivichan once again explains:
"Both shows have a chibi-like character which change the life of the main character and help them in their love/social/school life. Personally I like Mirumo better for its innocence, and Amu hinamori is a lot more irritating as compared to Kaede, but both shows are similar in their own ways."
For colorful titles full of fighting, you might enjoy either Magica Wars or Kyousoygiga.
Hasse returns with this reason:
"Both anime are full of wacky, colourful animation and lots of fighting, and both are much more based in older Japanese culture than most other anime. Fans of either would probably appreciate the other."
Want some lighthearted fun? Bronia thinks you'd like Encouragement of Climb or Hanayamata.
He explains:
"Shy female lead and her energetic friend doing some sort of hobby that's uncommon in an anime. The friend is more experienced in the hobby than the beginner lead. Both are very cute shows that act sort of as a how-to guide for getting into either hiking or yosakoi. They take the characters and the viewer through all the steps of starting their new hobby, from the first shopping trip to actually hiking/dancing. Both shows also show a progression of the girls' friendship. If you likee Yama no Susume but find the 5 minute episodes aren't enough, definitely try Hanayamata. If you like Hanayamata and want more like it, Yama no Susume is a great starting point."
Finally, for the few of you out there who haven't seen Haruhi, you might enjoy it if you liked Haganai (or vice versa)
pikachu203 thinks you'd like the pair because:
"Both shows are about an average-ish boy meeting up with an eccentric girl and creating an odd club that tends to do out of the ordinary comedic things and has lots of quirky adventures. Yozora is only a tad less bosy than Haruhi, though you'd probably enjoy both characters equally. The casts of characters are both very quirky, and you can definitely draw a few parallels between them. They both offer a unique blend of humor with otaku culture tossed in. I would definitely recommend one to fans of the other."
Recommend anime for *me*
Now that Anime-Planet V4 is launched, I'm giving myself some rare time to catch up on awesome series from the last few years. I rarely ever have time to watch anime anymore as running/developing Anime-Planet is a second full time job, but I'm giving myself a good few weeks to catch up! So far, I've already marathoned Psycho-Pass and am watching a few others.
I plan to do a future "Anime-Planet Recommends" article where I mention my own recommendation pairs based on the stuff I'm currently watching, and would love for your suggestions of your "best of" anime from the last year or two that I should definitely check out! I tend to hate ecchi and am not a huge fan of sports, but otherwise tend to enjoy whatever. Feel free to post your favorites in the comments!
See you next time!
