BLEACH Ch. 588 Review

Yhwach's plan has fallen into place, and he's come to destroy the Reiokyu and all that inhabit it. However, Tenjirou Kirinjiplans to greet these intruders with a nice, lava-hot bath.

The Good

How the mighty have fallen.
How the mighty have fallen.

I have some issues with where the story have gone, but the quality in the art and panel work gives a great sense of the action that is found in the chapter. The dialog in the final scene was the most enjoyable for me. It's so refreshing to find characters that aren't so dense as to fall for an enemy goading an attack.

I find myself oddly curious to find out if Yumichika's assessment of Giselle turns out to be true. Is she actually...a he? It's possible the character is a cross dresser, but it's equally plausible that Yumichika is purposefully being insulting to entice her to show her hand first.

In a weird way, I almost feel sorry for the fate Bambietta has fallen to. She used to be an elite in the Stern Ritter until her defeat and following zombification at the hands of Giselle. It's only confusing why Giselle would have been sitting on such a trump card all this time.

The Bad

The story pace summed up in a single panel.
The story pace summed up in a single panel.

The Zero Squad appear to be incredibly reckless. They must have known that Ichigo's speedy arrival would have left their various layers of protection vulnerable. How could Yhwach know it but everyone else there be so oblivious? You would have thought that someone would have been standing guard at the entrance till it was once again sealed. Well, apparently not. They all just went right back to their hobbies with their front gate wide open for anyone to stroll through. None of them were even monitoring the war below.

I'm noticing an astounding flaw in the Vandenreich invasion, or was this just poor war planning. While I do think it's a brilliant idea to create a foot hold on the Reiokyu by opening a portal for your troops to invade, it seems that Yhwach is wasting it by just having cannon fodder flooding through it. You'd naturally want some of your high-level fighters to keep the 13 Court Guard captains from following, but it would have been better to have a handful of the Stern Ritter to support the invasion along with the foot soldiers. They're basically red shirts with the sole purpose of being wiped out by the Zero Squad.

Verdict 3/5

None of the events I really have any problem with in this issue. I'm just confounded by how fast we've come to find ourselves here. This scene of the Reiokyu invasion feels like something we should have much later, after a couple of brawls between Captains and Stern Ritter. The break in of what's suppose to be the most secure location in the universe comes across as so effortless to the point of being ridiculous. Especially looking back on all the lengths Aizen went through to do the very same thing.

I still had fun reading, and I'm anticipating next week's edition of BLEACH after that reveal at the end.
