A couple weeks back, we featured the OTAKU issue of the DEVASTATOR on the VICE PIT, and asked you Vicers to recall other projects where anime fans spoofed themselves. Now, we've reached out to Geoffrey Golden, the DEVASTATOR'S editor-in-chief, and asked him to explain this magazine that's put some many dragonflies into the otaku ointment...
ANIME VICE : We can't start an interview off without
challenging your otaku cred. The Vicers demand proof! So... what is the single
most otaku-y thing you've ever done?
Geoffrey Golden : The most otaku-y thing I’ve ever done was in high
school, a time when everyone does the most otaku-y thing they’ll ever do. My
friends and I watched every episode of NEON GENESIS EVANGELION in one evening.
I’ve never been more tired and confused at the same time.
AV : How would you describe this magazine to
those who have yet to fall beneath the DEVASTATOR's unstoppable treads?
GG : All will fall to the
Devastator – so says the prophesy!
THE
DEVASTATOR is a mix of comics and comedy for geeks. We challenge writers and
artists from The DAILY SHOW, ONION, Adult Swim and Marvel Comics to fill 60
pages with hilariousness based on a nerdy theme.
Our
recent books include OTAKU,
APOCALYPSE and TOYS & GAMES.
AV : Our favorite feature in the Otaku issue was
definitely the DICK NOTE. What dick-ishly inconvenient comeuppance would you
wish upon Light Yagami?
GG : I’ll wish that Light gets a slight hand
cramp, which will hopefully stop him from committing all those murders!
AV : Felipe
Smith drew the OTAKU issue's cover - - and he's one of the only American
artists to ever make it as a mangaka in Japan. What other notable talents
should readers get hyped up about for this issue?
GG : I
think fans of the manga style will enjoy hilarious artwork in OTAKU by
webcomickers Molly Nemecek (WOO HOO!) and Erin Nagy (LEETSTREET BOYS). We’re
also excited to feature an exclusive new Anime Club comic by KC Green and many
photos of comedian Joe Lo Truglio (THE STATE, BROOKLYN NINE NINE) romancing an
anime body pillow.
AV : Regular
attendees of geeky conventions in Southern California have surely spotted the
DEVASATOR's booth on the exhibitor floor. Which cons will be you assaulting
next year?
GG : We’ll be blasting into a number of shows
across the country next year, including WonderCon Anaheim, LA Times Festival of
Books, Emerald City Comicon in Seattle and Phoenix Comic-Con, just to name a
few.
AV : Have
you had any noteworthy run-ins with otaku at any of these cons? Perhaps some
shenanigans with an ornery InuYasha cosplayer?
GG : I
can’t think of a specific instance off-hand. It’s been fun watching groups of
otaku teens notice our “Dick Note” reverse book cover -- their brains appear to
break in unison.
AV : It overloads their scanners basically. Thanks, Geoffrey!
