Nippon Ichi Software Announces New PS Vita Project with Bizarre Name

Strangely-named games aren't really a big deal anymore. It used to be kind of funny to hear what developers in Japan would come up with, but we've all grown accustomed to it by now. Still, Nippon Ichi Software's latest announced project, htoL #NiQ: Hotaru no Nikki, doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

The downloadable game has players controlling a firefly to guide a girl named Mion. In addition to the obstacles you guide Mion through, there's a shadow world in which you control a shadow firefly, allowing you to remove objects and advance through levels. Enemies, which are only visible from the shadow perspective, can kill Mion, so it sounds like you'll need to balance your time in both worlds.

Masayaki Furuya, who had a hand in the Disgaea series' chibi character animation, is directing and handling character designs. According to a Dengeki interview with NIS president Sohei Shinkawa, the company wanted to challenge themselves with something original.

htoL #NiQL Hotaru no Nikki is coming to PS Vita in Japan for ¥3,086 ($30), and will also be available in a limited-run retail version that comes in a special box with an art book, soundtrack, and tin badges for ¥5,800 ($56.50).
