What’s amusing thing about this video is that we’ve all already
seen what STAR WARS would look like as anime… in pretty much every space opera anime produced after 1977.
Look at GUNDAM, SPACE ADVENTURE COBRA and CAPTAIN HARLOCK,
and the way series like GATCHAMAN and SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO were… *AHEM *…
regionalized. Those series aren’t knockoffs, to be sure - - and I’m not going to put the ol’ SW on a
pedestal and act like it wasn’t wearing a whole host influences on its sleeve
- - but all the same, we’d be rather hysterically denying the obvious if we
acted like everybody wasn’t chasing this particular golden goose in the 80’s.
Anyway, if you really dug the STAR WARS manga volumes that TokyoPop put out in the late 90’s, and you’ve idly wondered how they’d look in motion, the fine folks at Nacho Punch granted your wish over the holiday break.
Out of all the little touches, the Snow Troopers literally whipping the rebels is what tickles me the most. Anime space operas never quite got over BARBARELLA, and that’s exactly the sort of flourish you would’ve seen in a show like this with a… cheekier view of the galaxy.
Might as well ask… how do you Vicers picture a STAR WARS anime? It’d be far different from this, right?
