Sony's ambitious Playstation Home virtual world service first launched on the Playstation 3 has run its course, with Sony Computer Entertainment confirming that following the gradual shutdown of the service later this year by ending new content delivery on November 12th, and access to downloadable content is also ending on December 3rd, with the complete shutdown of the service set for March 15th 2015 in the US, Europe and Japan.
Home was originally developed by Sony Computer Entertainment's London Studio and first launched to the public in 2008 after numeous closed betas and demos after the launch of the Playstation 3. It offered a virtual social network to Playstation 3 owners with customizable avatars, mini-games and virtual homes that could be decorated with trophies and special items.
The idea behind Playstation Home was one where all Playstation 3 owners would be able to congregate with each other and share experiences as well as enjoying content exclusive to Home, such as exclusive downloads and trailers along with special events. During the years, the service operated quietly with little in the way of fanfare outside of events such as E3 or Sony's own Playstation events, where the company would offer livestreams through Home, as well as other exclusive content. Sony cited "a shifting landscape" as the reason for the shutdown of the service in a statement to GamesIndustry.biz
Did any of you use Playstation Home frequently, or was it just something you used once and promptly forgot about?
