FEATURE: Anime-Planet Recommends... Unorthodox Edition

Welcome back to another edition of "Anime-Planet Recommends..."

Fall season is quickly approaching and pumpkin spice lattes beckon, but for now, enjoy the last days of summer with some new anime suggestions.

Last week, we covered many recommendations made by newcomers to the site - it's always nice to see new names in the queue! This week, thanks to even more newcomers, we're showcasing only unique or unusual pairings that have never been featured in "Anime-Planet Recommends...". It'll be short and sweet, but hopefully will give you some new options.

For flashy, fantastical movies, you can't get much better than Summer Wars or Welcome to THE SPACE SHOW - this is a recommendation I personally agree with, as well.

Summer Wars

Welcome to the Space Show

Porphyreus has this to say:

"One is about a wonderful virtual world, the other about a wonderful trip to the moon (and beyond), and they're equally fascinating to watch. If you're a fan of quality animation and freaky designs (the visuals here are quite psychedelic), don't miss these two. Plot-wise, these are the typical family friendly flick with lot of good vibes, good fun for all ages."

BL fans, look no further than Love Stage or the classic Gravitation

Love Stage

Gravitation

snivets says:

"Both Love Stage and Gravitation are supremely cute BL stories that involve members of the entertainment industry. Romance and drama abound--if you liked one, definitely check out the other!"

In the sports arena, fans of The Prince of Tennis II might enjoy Baby Steps or vice versa.

Prince of Tennis

Baby Steps

Annalyn writes:

"The main reason I recommend Baby Steps, besides the shared sport, is that Ei-chan from Baby Stepsreminds me a lot of Inui from Prince of Tennis. If, like me, you missed Inui after the first run, and weren't satisfied with the new series' portrayal of him, then you'd probably like Baby Steps. And, of course, Baby Steps has much of the same hard work and tennis education we've come to love—just without the close knit team. There are a lot of differences between the two anime, but the recommendation must be made."

For epic fantasies, you might enjoy Kemono no Souja Erin or Juuni Kokki

Erin

Juuni Kokki

brunciscs thinks you'd like these because:

"Both are epic animes, where we can follow the development of the characters, in the changing world. And both series have their magnificent backgrounds, and twists in the storylines."

LOUD NOISES! Fans of absurdity and overreactions should check out Thermae Romae and Medamayaki no Kimi Itsu Tsubusu, according to Funkgun.

Thermae Romae

Medamayaki

He says:

"YELL, OVER REACT!!!

If you like that odd newspaper strip feel and massive overreactions you might enjoy either of these titles. Thermae has more of an actual story with time travel, but that said, if you enjoyed the oddities of the main protagonists over reactive nature, you might enjoy the opposite title. "

Nostalgic for one of the harem classics, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki? You might appreciate this season's Invaders of the Rokujyoma.

Tenchi Muyo

Invaders of the Rokujyoma

Balzack explains:

"Invaders of the Rokujyouma is a lot like Tenchi Muyo with more modern anime tropes and humor.

There's a likeable protagonist surrounded by/is inconvenienced by a harem, and he has mysterious powers and/or a mysterious bloodline.  Plus ther's space princesses, silly battles, and other random harem shenanigans.  Heck there's even two guardian statues that are eerily similar to the ones from Tenchi Universe!

I grew up really enjoying Tenchi Muyo so it was nice to see an anime with a more modern spin on the same basic premise."

In the realm of the bizarre, there's always Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space or Cat Soup (the latter is one of my favorites as well).

Tamala

Cat Soup

Ailly explains:

"Both titles have anthropomorphic cat protagonists being caught in real bizarre circumstances. Nothing makes much sense, but I guess that's the charm of these kind of works. Tamala has a more consistent storyline, though I personally enjoyed Cat Soup more because of the wieird imagery."

Suikoden the game is mentioned, and my ears immediately perk up. For our final recommendation this week, DidIKnowYou thinks you might enjoy Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East and Brave 10.

Hakkenden

Brave 10

He says:

"Both animes incorporate searching for other individuals to complete some sort of group. Hakkenden has 8, Brave10, you guessed it, 10. Basically, they remind me of searching for the 108 stars of destiny like in the old Suikoden video games-- which are some of my favorite video games. So if you enjoyed one, you're likely to enjoy the other."

That's all of the recommendations for this week! Before we adjourn, a quick answer to some questions you've had about why certain anime show up in this column.

Announcement

I'm sometimes asked why [this anime] isn't in the recs list for the week, or why some aren't available to watch on Crunchyroll. Sometimes, passionate fans insist in the comments section that [some other anime] is a much better pairing for [this one]

The recommendations featured here are made by YOU on Anime-Planet over the past week. A mixture of different genre recs are chosen from that list, especially pairs not featured recently in this column or ones that are available to watch on CR. The more recs made, the more options to choose from - so if you have any awesome ideas, don't forget to add them on the site! ^_^

Thanks for stopping by and see you next week!
