North American esports organisation Major League Gaming has announced shoutcaster Ben “Benson” Bowe as one of the first esports broadcasters to be granted an O-1 Visa by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Bowe will be joining MLG as a full-time host and producer for MLG.tv, a video streaming platform available online and on mobile. While O-1 Visas have previously been granted to television hosts and broadcasters, MLG alleges that this event marks the first time the Visa has been granted to an individual in the esports industry.
Last year, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services approved, for the first time, a P-1 Athlete Visa for professional gamers to work as esports competitors in the United States.
MLG.tv was launched in November last year. MLG CEO Sundance DiGiovanni issued a challenge to Twitch.tv earlier this year, saying that content creators could make more money on MLG’s video streaming platform than with Twitch.
