Spring is upon us! Join us as we view new pilots this season, and see where they fit on the highly-scientific Rock-or-Suck Scale… FAIRY TAIL SEASON 2 -- BLACK BULLET -- THE COMIC ARTIST & HIS ASSISTANTS -- ONE WEEK FRIENDS
It’d be real easy to read in some subtext here. Something about certain liquors
being actual ‘spirits’ which only a select breed of creative types can handle imbibing
for inspiration. Or something like that.
This felt like the mellow MUSHI-SHI version of those scenes in MOULIN ROUGE
where Kylie Minogue was the Green Fairy of absinthe…
I caught the extended preview (OVA? Ashcan? Zero issue?) for
MUSHI-SHI’s return that ran a couple months back. Now that this new iteration
has been officially subtitled “the Next Chapter” in some parts, I can’t help
but chortle a little. I had some idle hope that my wish could finally
be fulfilled here, and we’d see Ginko headline a longer-form serial
that actually moves forward. But no - - it’s going to be as episodic as the
first iteration. So, this isn't the next chapter so much as it's just another one. A few years of improved
animation will be the only major difference.
There isn’t really anything wrong with that, of course. Anime’s
certainly got enough serials that relentlessly plot. If you want to a show that
you can just pick up at any time, relax as the atmosphere washes over you,
and truly step into another world, then you can’t go wrong with MUSHI-SHI. Much like COWBOY BEBOP, it's more-or-less installation art ideally suited to late night viewing.
Still, if I’m being brutally honest, the show can get a little
repetitive. It can even get so low-key that searching for the point - - like in this fable
of golden sake, for example - - can feel akin to critiquing ambient music. It’s so beside the
point, actually, that it might as well be in another universe. You know, the
kind you like to step into when you watch this.
Watch this first
episode and decide for yourself.
