Zeppeli’s mentor’s name is Tonpetty? Oh, like Tom Petty? Some of these
references are reaching. Then again, I suppose the cobbled Engrish
names that get throw around in any American-produced ninja epic are just as
eye-roll inducing to the other side of the Pacific. The notion of Tom Petty of the Heartbreakers being some Tibetan
sage is just… patently ridiculous.
(Maybe not any more ridiculous than him being
the leader of a post-Apocalyptic community in the POSTMAN, though...)
To continue my observation about the show’s ‘reverse-inspirational
relationship’ with video games of the 80’s and early 90’s; the whole procession
of events still feels exactly like something out of a Genesis title. Zeppeli
making a giant hang-glider out of leaves, Jojo getting stuck in a neck chain
death match, Poco having to sneak in through a vent to save him… it’s just
pressing on a ton of sensory buttons for me. Maybe I played some bootleg of a JOJO on my GameBoy and didn’t realize
it?
I’m curious how long this fracas with Dio is going to continue. The
show’s different from a lot of contemporary anime for how it’s tightly focused on
this one conflict between the good guy and the bad guy. Very personal stakes
were established immediately and the tension’s been kept relentlessly highly-strung
for all this tim. There have been no real breathers, nor jumping around
to establish other B-plots or side-characters that aren’t directly involved in
Jojo’s struggle with Dio.
It makes for an unusually strong thrill ride, now, to be sure... but I do wonder how long this focus can be sustained over a whole season?
Watch "Tomorrow’s
Courage" and decide for yourself, then read my comments about the previous
episode.
