Fanart Friday returns, bigger and better than ever before (or at least, that's what we're telling you). Last week, we swooned over our favorite Magical Girlfriends/Magical Boyfriends, but this week we're doing the Hollywood thing and getting infected with sequelitis, suggested by Vegetable Support Manager Bjaker (I'm so sad his business card doesn't say that)! Whether it's the continuing story of the same characters, a timeskip taking place years after the original story, or something unrelated taking place in the same universe, sequels can build and add to a story we know and love (or completely wreck them, but we won't get into that).
I'm actually a little surprised at all the requests for "season two" stuff, and need to explain why some of your requests might not show up: by definition, sequels usually get a name change, and succeeding seasons don't. Natsume Yujin-cho Shi is the third sequel to Natsume Yujin-cho, and Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting - Rising is the second sequel to Hajime no Ippo, despite both being continuations of the same story. However, the recent Kuroko's Basketball was still called Kuroko's Basketball, and showed up as a second season (and it's even following standard seasonal TV format). See what I'm getting at? Now, with that out of the way, let's get started!

My very specific rule (that Wikipedia agrees with!) gets met halfway by Familiar of Zero--the original had three successive "seasons," but the creators were kind enough to attach a new subtitle to each one as the show got crazier and crazier.

Another way to denote a sequel is to just add a number at the end of the title, like Black Butler II. More black! More butler! More shota! Holy crap, this series' Pixiv tag has a lot of shota.

Multiple sequels can string together to create a series or saga or whatever you want to call it, like the Harry Potter books. Seriously, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is probably my favorite book of the series, perfectly hitting those high, fun adventure notes before quickly going dark and dangerous in the last third of the book. The movie wasn't nearly as good.

So Fate/zero is a prequel to Fate/stay-night, and now we're waiting again for a Ufotable-produced remake of Fate/stay-night. I'm about halfway through Zero, so I think I'll be all set when it's time for the new stay-night to hit.

Natsume Yujin-cho goes for the "sequel seasons" while actually numbering them (sort of). This is yet another show where I watched an episode or two, really really liked it, and then got completely sidetracked by other shows. I'M SORRY I HAVE SUCH A SHORT ATTENTION SPAN

Not everything has to be a trilogy! While we have Arkham Knight coming out for next-gen systems, Batman: Arkham City really brought everything to a pretty good conclusion while improving almost every aspect of the game's already-solid mechanics. I still prefer the tightly-designed semi-open-world approach of Asylum, but City and Origins' huge maps were pretty solid.

I can understand why some people called Code Geass a trainwreck, because it was really, really hard to stop watching the chaos unfold. Code Geass R2 picked up after the absolutely insane ending of the first series, and upped the stakes... and the fanservice, to be honest.

Sometimes, a sequel can go pretty far off the path set by its predecessor. The original Full Metal Panic! balanced action, comedy, and romance, while second series Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu! focused completely on comedy and romantic hijinx. Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid got back to business with a darker, more violent story.
There was a lengthy discussion (or diatribe, one of the two) in last week's comments about Hayate the Combat Butler and its many sequels, and how they focus on the fanservice and comedy instead of actually adding to the series' story. How long has this been going on? I know of Cuties and Can't Take My Eyes Off You (which are incredibly stupid subtitles), but is this just a thing they do 'cause they want to save the best for last?

Still, I have to agree with another commenter--The Empire Strikes Back is, without a doubt, one of (if not the) greatest sequel of all time. It expands the Star Wars mythos, gives us bigger and more intense action sequences, and makes the story really count, giving everybody a chance to shine... except Threepio. F**k him.

Since I used it as the example last week for what a sequel was, of course Sailor Moon shows up here! Off the top of my head I remember Sailor Moon R, Stars, and Super StarS (could be wrong on one of those), but were there any more?
I finally started watching Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions, and despite my lingering and not-very-hidden hatred of all things moe, I'm actually really enjoying it so far. I'm not as excited for this chick showing up in Heart Throb, because the series already has enough feminine energy and is seriously ruining my anime viewing feng shui.

So what's the third season/series of Magi gonna be called? The original was Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, and the second was Magi: The Kingdom of Magic. My guess? Magi: The Magical Kingdom of Magical Magic with Even More Magical Fanservice, Because Holy Shit the Sumomo-mo-momomo Author Has Like No Self-Control. It can also fit into the current trend of ludicrously long titles with more-popular abbreviated titles. Also, those of you wondering why I included Magi here--it takes kind of a shift in focus between Labyrinth and Kingdom.

Now, as for the new Sword Art Online, I'm not sure if they're going to call it Gun Gale Online, or if they're just going to keep with the SAO title because it's more recognizable. See, the whole AOL ALO arc was its own thing, but felt like it was part of the continuing story of the first arc even though it took place in a different game.

Negima went through some pretty drastic changes from beginning to end, and sorta-sequel UQ Holder actually feels a lot like the later part of the series--at least, from what I remember.

The "benefit" (if you can call it that) of working on Fanart Friday at the Crunchyroll office is that I can shout over to other folks' desks and ask what they want to see in this week's installment. The downside of this is that I have to go through the whole process of finding a good picture, like this one for Uta no Prince-sama Maji Love 2000%. So what's the third season gonna be called? Maji Love 3000%? (It actually is being called Uta no Prince-Sama Maji Love 3000%.)

Let me tell you a little about the process of writing Fanart Friday: by good writing rules, I italicize every show title, but when it comes to shows we have, I have to go through a short process linking a show to its page. You have no idea how happy I am that I now get to do that extra little step for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, including the most recently-animated chapter--Part 3: Stardust Crusaders!

People may hate sequels, but sometimes they're incredibly important. I prefer Dragon Ball over Dragon Ball Z, but there are so many people who never would've gotten into anime and manga at all if it weren't for Z. (Also, I wanted an excuse to use this picture, because awwww. Also, why does adult Gohan have a Yaranaika face?)
