As a nerd who likes to sample
everything that nerdom has to offer, I often compare and contrast
things. This leads me to make recommendations based off things people
like, hence my article last week recommending the anime NAGI NO
ASUKARA to bronies (the self-professed adult fans of the new MY
LITTLE PONY show, if you've been living under an internet rock). I
most often do this with beer, but I can totally do it with cartoons
as well!
So let me tell you, bronies: you are
gonna love SQUID GIRL.
The eponymous Squid Girl is on a
mission to subjugate all of mankind as punishment for them polluting
the ocean. She surfaces on a beach in Japan, but instead of
conquering all she sees with her prehensile hair-tentacles she winds
up working for a beachfront restaurant. From there on it's slice of
life, learning-about-the-human-world sort of stuff with misadventures
based off misconceptions.
It's basically a reskin of SGT. FROG
featuring a precocious child instead of a hapless alien.
Each episode contains three or four
stories, allowing you to get a taste for the show rather quickly.
Squid Girl terrorizes, the befriends, then works for the
understanding Aizawa siblings at their restaurant, all the while
looking adorable and threatening to subjugate all of humanity as soon
as she's paid off her debts. It's good-natured, it's fun, and if you
think Pinkie Pie is Best Pony you will love Squid Girl.
