Earth: Year 2066 Early Access Review

Earth: Year 2066 Early Access Review

GameSpot’s early access reviews evaluate unfinished games that are nonetheless available for purchase by the public. While the games in question are not considered finished by their creators, you may still devote money, time, and bandwidth for the privilege of playing them before they are complete. The review below critiques a work in progress, and represents a snapshot of the game at the time of the review’s publication.

Earth: Year 2066 starts out on a road to nowhere. It’s a familiar scene that promises adventures amid familiar postapocalyptic cliches, and it’s easy to spy echoes of

The opening shot. That’s about as good as it gets.

The problems start as early as the title screen. The title itself crashes down against a bland pixelated field, looking for all the world like it first saw life in 3D text renders in an early version of Microsoft Word. Then it does nothing. No music plays and no prompts to press a key pop up, and thus I spent my first 30 or so seconds with Earth: Year 2066 wondering if it was still loading or had simply locked up. But no, pressing the spacebar was my open sesame, and it dumped me into a screen that promised day and night solo play as well as a multiplayer component.

That all works in theory, but most any given game offers a significantly better experience compared to what you get for your 20 bucks here. The world itself resembles a game designer’s midterm exam, with oddly detailed rusted water towers and a vaguely Mad Maxian village with chain-link perimeters sharing a landscape with grass that looks like magnified stubble on Nathan Drake’s chin. It’s only by looking down at your shadow that you deduce that you’re a robot of some sort, and one that looks vaguely like the sentient machine from the Short Circuit movies in the 1980s. Johnny Five may be alive, but here it’s a curse, not a blessing.

In Earth: Year 2066, there are no winners.

Things fall apart all too quickly. You can jump around and knock over cars, but it’s initially not even clear if the keybinds you select for the three available weapon slots work at all. Such a pity, especially since robots dressed as clowns waste no time in firing at you, although they pelt you with enough bullets before you die that you might be led to think they’re harmless. Floating creatures resembling the sentinels from The Matrix also fly about and dive-bomb you, all the while moaning as though suffering from chronic indigestion. Sometimes they just sit in trees, seemingly oblivious.

On occasion, you get lucky and one of the three guns triggers to fire back, but the enemies have so much health that it’s about as fun as flinging rice at a brick wall (and generally looks like it, too). The frame rate always locks up for a second when the robotic enemies start attacking you, and strategy never grows deeper than shooting, strafing, and jumping. Revving sounds grow ever louder as your robot wanders the landscape, but I’ve never quite worked out if the sounds are coming from me or the surrounding enemies. In truth, I usually had more fun with the (seeming) bugs than the actual gameplay, with enemies sometimes shooting you far into the sky as though a giant just slugged you in Skyrim. Sometimes they even send you careening off the map.

I got one! Well, actually, he kind of got himself.

The unexpected flights off the world were hilarious at first, but then the shock settled in as I realized I could see the full extent of what I paid for. That road, that abandoned village (complete with a fuel tank that I can run straight through), a clump of hills, and a radar tower make up the entirety of Earth: Year 2066 in its current state, and it’s all set on a little beige square adrift in a sea of fluffy clouds. Perhaps there’s a message in there about the futility of human endeavor or even a cynical view of how the world will fare under the increasing pressures of overpopulation and the threat of wars. More likely, however, it’s just that the build released to Steam is a barely functional disaster without any signs of potential. You can experience the entirety of the game in 10 minutes tops.

Earth: Year 2066′s severe incompletion points to one of the major flaws of early access play; it’s in such a rough state that it makes DayZ look like a refined classic by comparison. This is access so early that it’s barely off the drawing board, and it’s worth wondering if developer Muxwell wouldn’t have been better served by outlining its full scope for the project on Kickstarter and generating more funds that way. Perhaps in time Earth: Year 2066 will morph into something that will surprise us all, and we’ll find a quirky indie story sharing the same screen space with those robots and dilapidated buildings. For now, however, it takes you down roads that you’re better off not taking.

What’s There?

A road, a junkyard village, some hills, a radar tower, some robots–and that’s about it.

What’s to Come?

If updates on Steam are any indication, bug fixes.

What Does it Cost?

$19.99, or too much.

When Will it Be Finished?

No telling.

What’s the Verdict?

Earth: Year 2066 is early access at its most literal, but there’s no concrete evidence that anything more exciting than this is in the works. Stay away for now. Far away.

Sentai Announces “Amnesia” English Dub Cast

With DVD and Blu-ray releases coming June 3rd, Sentail Filmworks has announced the English dub cast for the anime adaptation of otome game Amnesia.

ABOUT AMNESIA

She runs through the flaming building seeking escape. She struggles in the water, desperate to keep afloat. She wakes in the hospital, with no knowledge of how she got there or memory of who she was. People she doesn’t know come to visit her, but only the one whom no one else can see, the spirit boy who calls himself Olion, seems to understand what has happened to her, and he tells her not to let anyone know of her amnesia.

As the Heroine struggles to recall her past and connect the random recollections in her mind to form memories, one thing seems sure: time is no longer a constant, and the date of August 1st – the day she keeps waking up in the hospital – is somehow significant. So are each of the people she meets, though the stories that link her to them seem to shift like sands in an emptying hourglass. Will she be able put the pieces of the puzzle together, and what will she see if it becomes complete?

Ubisoft lining up Assassin’s Creed movie director

Ubisoft lining up Assassin’s Creed movie director

Talks are underway with Justin Kurzel to direct the upcoming Assassin’s Creed film, Deadline reports.

Kurzel is relatively unknown, having only directed a few projects to date. Most recently, he worked on a film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth starring Michael Fassbender–set to play the lead role in the Assassin’s Creed film–in the eponymous role of Macbeth.

According to Deadline, New Regency and Ubisoft Motion Pictures have yet to sign Kurzel to a deal, “but they are eager to get this film started, so it’ll come soon.”

The Assassin’s Creed movie has been in the works for some time now. Fassbender, known best for his roles in movies such as Prometheus, Inglorious Basterds, X-Men: First Class, and 12 Years a Slave, has been attached since mid-2012. (He’s never played the games, if you’re wondering.) Later that year, the movie was fast-tracked, and soon after playwright Michael Lesslie was brought on as a writer.

The movie was reportedly set for release in May 2015, but was delayed late last year until August 7, 2015. We recently learned the movie will be re-written by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, though whether that will push the release even further back is unknown.

Assassin’s Creed is just one of six Ubisoft properties the company is attempting to base a movie on, the others being Ghost Recon, Watch Dogs, Far Cry, Splinter Cell, and Rayman’s Rabbids. Films based on games are notorious for falling apart before they are released, so it remains to be seen how many of these will actually come to fruition.

GTA 5 unaffected by GameSpy shutdown; some Rockstar games not so lucky

GTA 5 unaffected by GameSpy shutdown; some Rockstar games not so lucky

Rockstar’s biggest game on the market right now, Grand Theft Auto V, will not be affected in any way by the shutdown of GameSpy’s servers at the end of May. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for some of Rockstar’s older games, including Max Payne 3, Red Dead Redemption, and Grand Theft Auto IV, some of which will see certain features soon become unavailable.

Rockstar announced today that its “teams are currently working to patch specific older titles to keep the transition as smooth as possible and minimize the impact to online-enabled play and your in-game experience.”

Most of its games will not be dramatically affected, with only leaderboards or Rockstar Social Club features being removed. While disappointing, those measures are preferable to the outright removal of multiplayer support, which is what’s happening in a handful of cases.

Those cases include the Mac version of Max Payne 3, the PlayStation 3 version of Midnight Club: Los Angeles, and all versions of Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition (including Dub Edition Remix). None of these three games will offer online multiplayer after May 31, or possibly sooner.

Meanwhile, Social Club website stat tracking and leaderboards are on their way out of Red Dead Redemption, GTA IV, and Midnight Club LA. In-game multiplayer leaderboards in the PS3 versions of Red Dead, GTA IV, and Midnight Club LA are on the chopping block as well, as are Social Club features in Beaterator and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on DS and PSP.

Rockstar’s support website lists the full details on the implications of the GameSpy shutdown for all of its games.

Other companies’ games are being similarly affected by the May 31 GameSpy shutdown. The PC versions of Crysis and Crysis 2 will lose their multiplayer modes on that date, as will a range of 2K Games PS3 titles, most notably Civilization Revolution and Borderlands. 2K has indicated it’s exploring ways to bring back multiplayer for those two titles, while EA has indicated it hopes to do the same with the early Battlefield games.

GameStop launching new Make-A-Wish donation program

GameStop launching new Make-A-Wish donation program

Video game retailer GameStop is launching a new donation initiative that will allow shoppers to give to the Make-A-Wish foundation at stores across the country. Starting May 1 and running through May 31, GameStop shoppers will be given an opportunity to make a $1 donation to the wish-granting organization when they shop at GameStop and Spring Mobile stores in person or online.

GameStop aims to raise at least $75,000 in charitable donations during the month, the company said in a press release today. The retailer’s partnership with Make-A-Wish began in 2007, and through their efforts, more than a thousand children have been granted shopping sprees to date. In 2009, GameStop even brought WWE fighter John Cena to a store to play video games with a young boy.

“Wish kids are such an inspiration to me personally, and I’m excited to be able to offer our loyal customers an opportunity to show their support for this great organization by giving to those children in need,” GameStop CFO Rob Lloyd said in a statement. Lloyd is also a board member of the Make-A-Wish North Texas chapter.

Today’s announcement comes after GameStop told us last month that the company would be expanding its support for Make-A-Wish in 2014.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a non-profit organization that grants “wishes” to children with life-threatening medical issues. World of Warcraft and Diablo developer is also a regular supporter of the Make-A-Wish foundation, most recently donating sales of World of Warcraft pets and mounts last year to benefit the organization.
