US Pro Drifting Team Debuts New Race Car With "Initial D" Tribute

Formula Drift may not be as big as other racing series in the US, but the series proudly displays its Japanese car culture influence all the way down to the teams that participate in the series. To that end, the Papadakis Racing team has decided to custom modify a 2017 Toyota Corolla iM for drifting duty instead of getting lost in the sea of Toyota GT86's, Ford Mustangs and 240SXs that make up the majority of the field in the series.

To celebrate the debut of the new car, the team has decided to shoot an introduction video that pays tribute to Initial D, by reenacting the opening sequence used in the anime adaptation with driver Frederic Aasbo. The car will debut this weekend at the season-opening Formula D event on the Streets of Long Beach street circuit to open up the festivities ahead of the IndyCar and IMSA WeatherTech races being held next weekend on the same course. The intro video is embedded below.

A YouTube user has also taken the liberty to upload a video detailing the accuracy of the reenactment
