"Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends" Tops Japan's Weekend Box Office

Rurouni Kenshin: Densetsu no Saigo-hen (Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends), the second part of the final installment of the Rurouni Kenshin live-action film series featuring Takeru Sato as Kenshin Himura finally released in Japan on 434 screens on September 13. As expected, it easily topped the weekend box office with an impressive 919,479,200 yen on 717,958 ticket sales. The number is 130% above the opening weekend record of the first feature film in 2012, and 51% better than that of the previous part Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Taika-hen (Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno). The total three-day holiday weekend gross (the Monday September 15 was one of the Japanese national holidays, Respect for the Aged Day) was 1.3 billion yen.

Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno, which is now the top-grossing Japanese live-action film of 2014, still ranked at the 7th, having almost reached the 5 billion yen mark. The combined gross of the two films

is expected to be at least 12 billion yen.

In spite of mostly negative reviews, the live-action adaptation film of Lupin the Third directed by Ryuhei

Kitamura has already earned 1.1 billion yen in 11 days, ranking at 4th in its second week. Kitamura

expressed his hope for the sequel in two years at the film's international premiere in the 4th LA EigaFest

held on September 12.
